Eastern Paraguay is the land between the Paraguay River and the Paraña River. The Paraña River forms part of the border between Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay. The river does not stop in Paraguay; it flows through Argentina to the Atlantic Ocean. The Paraña River is an outlet to the sea for Paraguay. One third of Eastern Paraguay is the Paraña Plateau. This plateau is heavily forested, while low, grassy plains characterize the other two-thirds of Eastern Paraguay and forested hills. More than 95% of Paraguay’s population lives in Eastern Paraguay. The population is concentrated along the Paraguay River or in the southwest area of the region. The southwest area is home to many small towns and farming villages throughout the countryside (Wilkie).
